City seeks applications from residents to serve on Charter Review Commission

The City of Belton is seeking residents to serve on the Belton Charter Review commission.

Any qualified voter who lives within Belton city limits is eligible to apply. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

The City Charter is essentially the City’s constitution. The Charter establishes rules that make up the basic structure, power and authority of our City government, including the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager. The Charter outlines how decisions are made.

The City Charter, first approved by voters in November 2008, requires a comprehensive review no less often than every 10 years. The most recent Charter Review Commission submitted their recommendations and final report to the City Council in June 2018, with voter approval in November 2018.

The Commission will consist of three residents from each Ward and will meet for the first time in November 2026. The Commission will determine their meeting schedule, with meetings at least once a month to discuss sections of the Charter and recommend any changes. The Commission will complete their work and report to the City Council by October 2027. Any recommended amendments will be placed on the April 4, 2028, ballot for voter consideration.
