The Belton City Council seeks applications from residents to serve on Charter Review Commission
Citizens interested in being considered for appointment must submit a completed application and copy of their voter registration card to the Office of the City Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Documents may be emailed or dropped off at City Hall Annex, 520 Main Street, Belton. Any qualified voter who lives within Belton city limits is eligible to apply.

The City Charter is essentially the City’s constitution. The Charter establishes rules that make up the basic structure, power and authority of our City government, including the Mayor, City Council, and City Manager. The City Charter, fist approved by voters in November 2008, requires a comprehensive review no less often than every 10 years.

Why are we reviewing the City Charter? The City Charter, first approved by voters in November 2008, requires a comprehensive review no less often than every 10 years. The most recent Charter Review Commission submitted their recommendations and final report to the City Council in June 2018, with voter approval in November 2018.
Who is eligible to serve? Any qualified voter who resides within Belton city limits is encouraged to apply.
How many people will serve on the Commission? The Commission will consist of three residents from each Ward. From the pool of candidates, each Councilmember will choose one from their Ward and the Mayor will choose one from each Ward, for a total of 12 Commission members.
Do I need to be an expert on government? No. The Commission is looking for residents who care about their community and are willing to participate in thoughtful discussions. A variety of perspectives is encouraged.
What's the time commitment? The Charter Review Commission will meet begining in November 2026. The Commission will determine their meeting schedule, with meetings at least once a month to discuss sections of the Charter and recommend any changes. The Commission will complete their work and report to the City Council by October 2027. Any recommended amendments will be placed on the April 4, 2028, ballot for voter consideration.
