Water Service Line Notification
Belton Water Services is dedicated to delivering safe and reliable drinking water to our residents. Belton takes the safety of drinking water seriously.
Along with other water utilities in our region and across the country, Belton Water Services is compiling an inventory of water pipe material on city-owned and customer-owned (private) service lines. This is called the Water Service Line Inventory. A letter will be sent to those addresses for which we are needing information. If you do not receive a letter from us, you don't need to do anything.
Due to a printing error, a checkbox on the letters was incorrectly marked. The incorrect marking does not mean that a service line has been confirmed as galvanized or requires replacement. The purpose of the letter is to request assistance in verifying service line material where records are incomplete.
Why is a Water Service Line Inventory Important
As water flows through plumbing systems it could come into contact with lead pipes or pipe fittings that might potentially impact drinking water. In 1989, lead was banned as a pipe material for water service lines in the state of Missouri. Most buildings constructed after 1989 will not have lead, but it is possible.
What is a Water Service Line
Service lines are the pipes that connect from water main pipes to buildings and houses (see graphic). Ownership of each service line is divided between Belton Water Services and the customer. The service line material can be different for each side.
Typically, there are two sides of a water service line:
- The city-owned (Belton) service line is from the water main to just before the water meter.
- The customer-owned (private) service line extends from the water meter to the private property.
