ICYMI: North Scott Grant

Published on March 31, 2021

This is the kind of thing that your city really gets excited about – when we learned early this year that the Mid-America Regional Council had awarded the city of Belton a nearly $2 million Surface Transportation grant that will enable us to do a complete rehabilitation of our North Scott Corridor.

“In Belton, as in every city, there are always more things to be done than there is money to do them,” said Carolyn Yatsook, Belton economic development director. “When you can get almost all the way across the finish line on a priority item like significant improvements to the North Scott Corridor with a grant, it’s a thrill!”

Belton Public Works Director Greg Rokos led the effort to secure the grant. Many municipalities and dozens of projects competed for these limited grant dollars and it is a vanishingly rare occurrence to come out with a win. As is part of most grant programs, the city will also invest – about 20 percent of the project cost.

The project involves the entire corridor; a two-mile stretch, from just north of Route 58 to just south of 155th Street, with funds used to pave streets, replace curbs and rehabilitate sidewalks. The corridor will be reconfigured from four lanes to two with a continuous left turn lane in the north half of the project, which also will provide for on-street bicycle lanes.

“Once the city receives the funds, it will be a quick-moving project,” said Rokos. “Money from this grant will not be available until 2023 so the designing and planning will be done, the project bid and ready to go. The work should complete in 2024.”
