City of Belton Hosts Annual Stream Clean-Up Day

BELTON, MO—March 29, 2019— The City of Belton invites the public to participate in the City’s Annual Stream Clean-Up Day on Saturday, March 30 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The “Team Up to Clean Up” event will help ensure safer drinking water, decreased flooding from blocked culverts, and improve aquatic life.

Citizens are asked to gather at the eastern entrance of the Cornerstone Development, 16500 Cornerstone Dr., in Belton. Participants are encouraged to wear long pants and boots. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Coffee and donuts will be provided in the morning, with hot dogs and hamburgers served at noon.

Stream Clean-Up Day will serve as the official kick off for Belton’s Adopt-A-Stream program, a Public Works initiative that encourages residents, businesses and service groups to adopt local waterways. Adopt-A-Stream is designed to protect local streams, beautify surrounding areas and preserve wildlife. By adopting a stream segment, volunteers agree to collect nearby trash and organize periodic cleanups.

“The overarching goal of Adopt-A-Stream is to keep our waterways and streambanks clean, and this is a great opportunity to encourage residents of all ages to be good stewards of our natural resources,” said Belton City Manager Alexa Barton. “The program is designed to bring participation in clean water endeavors to a community and personal level by asking citizens to become actively involved in protecting our water resources.”

Adopt-A-Stream is open to any resident, local business, civic organization, watershed group, academic institution or scout group. Organizations are encouraged to select a local stream that they would like to adopt from the Adopt-A-Stream map.
