Engineering Technician

The City of Belton, Missouri (pop. 24,780) APWA Accredited Public Works Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Engineering Technician. The team this person will work with is a high character group with an excellent attitude toward public service and is responsible for project management of water, wastewater, streets, stormwater, and various engineering projects. The successful applicant must possess an attitude of trustworthiness, integrity, loyalty, and ability to work in a team-oriented organization. This position reports to the City Engineer.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Right-of-Way Permit processing
  • Bond processing for Right-of-Way Permits
  • National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Land Disturbance processing
  • Traffic Control Permit processing
  • Conducts inspections of public infrastructure and stormwater management elements on public and private construction projects for conformance to approved construction plans, specifications, and City standards;
  • Supports the Engineering Division in the review of plans and specifications pertaining to public infrastructure on public and private projects to ensure compliance with City standards;
  • Supports the Engineering Division in the execution of capital improvements projects including the monitoring of project schedules and budgets to ensure financial and schedule milestones are met;
  • Assists project managers (PM) in providing routine updates of project schedule and budgets;
  • Resolves public questions and concerns;
  • Coordinates with other municipal agencies and/or private utilities and companies involved in the project;
  • Works to prevent or resolve problems occurring during construction and assists the PM to ensure project records and documentation are properly maintained;
  • Provides engineering support/information for all Public Works Divisions (Engineering, Transportation, and Water Services) as well as other City Departments including Administration, Parks, Police, Fire, and Finance;
  • Inspects silt and erosion controls through the City; contacts responsible party if repairs to the silt and erosion control are required and conducts follow-up inspections to ensure compliance;
  • Performs inspections of newly installed and existing public and private utilities including stormwater management structures;
  • Responds to concerns raised by customers pertaining to public infrastructure, drainage concerns and private stormwater management facilities;
  • Serves as liaison between customers and the City of Belton in assigned areas;
  • Supports the relationship between the City of Belton and the constituent population by providing excellent customer service;
  • Promotes the City goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures;
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, client records, and City information;
  • Ensures that job duties are completed in strict adherence to established safe work practices;
  • Snow plowing (optional, and requires a Commercial driver’s license); and
  • Performs all other related duties as required or assigned.

Education and Experience: High School Diploma/GED and three years of construction experience that includes knowledge of installation of pipe, pipe testing, roads, concrete, structural concrete, and the tools and equipment needed; prefer Associates Degree in Construction Management or related field and work in a public sector environment or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

Required Licenses or Certifications: Possession of a valid Missouri State Driver’s License

Pay Range: $42,540.58 - $51,831.73 (mid-point) - $64,730.85
