The Community Development department's duty is to protect the public welfare, health, safety, and property values through the promotion, application, and enforcement of adopted building and zoning codes.

Apply for a Permit

Permits

Permits may be required for structural additions, deletions, electrical, plumbing and mechanical changes. Some examples are roof replacements, a new panel box, new bathroom, and HVAC changes.

Permit Applications can be emailed to Madison Rust or turned in at the City Hall Annex, 520 Main Street, Belton, MO 64012.

Permit Fees

Permit fees are primarily based on the value of the project and are calculated in accordance with the fee schedule(PDF, 1MB) located in the Unified Development Code.

Building Inspections

How to Schedule a Building Inspection

The City has instituted a policy of next-day scheduling for building inspections. To schedule an inspection, please call (816) 892-1260. Calling by 4:30 p.m. means your requested inspection will be scheduled for the following business day. Calls received after 4:30 p.m. will not be scheduled the next day.

Necessary Information

When you call for an inspection, provide the following information: 

  • Address of the job 
  • Contact phone number
  • Name of person requesting the inspection 
  • Permit number (not necessary if calling for an occupation license inspection)
  • Preference of a morning or afternoon inspection

*No Callbacks Will Be Made*

Adopted Codes

On September 27, 2022, the City Council approved the adoption of the 2018 International Building and Fire Codes and 2017 National Electrical Code, effective January 1, 2023. The currently adopted 2012 International Building and Fire Codes and 2011 National Electrical Code may be utilized until December 31, 2022, after which all new permit applications must comply with the newly adopted codes.
